We climbed Berray!

We climbed Berray . . . and it was a blast!

Elevation: 6,177′   Berray Mountain Lookout

Just like in The Summer of Our LivesI decided to hike up to Berray mountain lookout, so I could have the same experience that Mary Ellen does in the first book of the All for Jesus Gang!

The gang all showed up at our house after breakfast, since we lived the closest to Mr. Morton. Dad piled us up in the back of the truck and drove us over to his little cabin at the bottom of Berray mountain.
“Look at how high it is,” said Major, cranking his neck back.

The trail was 10.6 miles round trip, and ranked as moderately difficult. It took us 3 1/2 hrs to get up, including breaks.

There was a little pond about 3 miles up, and we followed a creek for part of the way. The mountain was covered in huckleberry and thimble berry bushes.

The lookout was awesome! We climbed up the three stair flights and went inside.

There was a wood stove and furniture.

It was beautiful up top, and a little colder, like the Professor said. We all paused and took in the view surrounding us. Almost every way I looked I could see for miles. Something about it made me feel closer to God – just the stillness and beauty of His creation. Overlooking in awe what the Creator’s hand had fashioned made Mary Ellen Tucker feel very small, very small indeed.

It took us about 2 hrs to get back down. I am looking forward to writing about the hike in the book!

Noxon, Montana

Here are some pictures from a fun little road trip I got to take to visit Noxon, Montana – the hometown location of Mary Ellen and the All for Jesus Gang. Bull River was overflowing from all the snow melt, and the little general store was similar to what I’d imagined the Professor’s family’s general store would look like.

A peek at my messy binder

Well here it’s been a little over a year since I published my first book. So ta-da! I’ve actually been working on this (not consistently unfortunately) for quite some time now. This is the first draft of my second book, The Summer of Our Lives. It will be the first in a short (by that I mean roughly 100 pgs) adventure series of a group of young kids (ages 9-15). The series will be seen through the main character’s eyes, Mary Ellen, as she and her brother and friends rollick the countryside, get into scraps, and learn important life lessons.

Sneak Peak below!

My side smacked the handle of that iron frying pan when we hit the bottom of the hill. Did it hurt! I stuck my free hand in the gunny sack to pull out that bad pan, and I felt something else metal; the handle of a pistol. And then I realized how much danger I was actually in.

Character Interview: Matthew (Trouble)

Matthew (Trouble, Matt) brother of Laura

How old are you? 12

What do you like to do in your spare time? I like to build forts, climb trees, try to ride our bulls, swim, and do just about anything crazy and dangerous.

Any pet peeves?  Well, I really don’t like not being allowed to do things or rules in general, but I know I know it’s meant for our well-being.

Give me one interesting thing about yourself?  Though I’m mostly known as a wild mischievous boy, I’m not always being crazy as my name suggest. I enjoy going on trips with the Doc and helping him.

Favorite color? Green

Tell me about your family life. I live with my dad, mom, and sis, Lara. We run a cattle ranch outside of Twin Pines. I spend a lot of my time working on the ranch with the cattle.

Future career plans? As much as I love ranch work, I would love to go to college and study to be a doctor someday. It’s sort of my dream.

Character Interviews: Archie/Cheif

Archer (Chief, Archie)

How old are you? 15

What do you like to do in your spare time? I like to hunt in the woods, build, and spend quiet time in God’s word.

Any pet peeves?  I can’t stand it when people act disrespectful.

Give me one interesting thing about yourself? I am the leader of the gang though I am generally softer spoken.

What is your favorite food?  Steak and potatoes

Favorite color? Gray

Tell me about your family life. I live with my Dad and Mom outside of Twin Pines. We raise sheep and have dogs and a few chickens that are Mom’s. Dad has a carpentry business that I help him with. I also have a married older sister who lives in Colorado.

Future career plans? I enjoy carpentry and I plan to be a handy man and run a small ranch like I live on now. I’ve also thought about joining the military.
